A study by the Journal of Urban Health found that sweeps of unhoused encampments in Denver had no effect on reducing crime. Yet, our unhoused neighbors continue to face numerous discriminations and misconceptions.
What Council can do
Vote to abolish the practice of sweeping unhoused encampments in Denver, instead focusing efforts on providing housing and services to those in camps.

The problem
Evictions and affordability are two key reasons people end up unhoused. Stopping improper evictions in their tracks is a first line of defense for ensuring residents have a roof over their heads. Yet, legal counsel for fighting evictions is only guaranteed for low-income residents, leaving a large gap of middle-income Denverites who can't afford a lawyer. This can put them on a path towards homelessness.
What Council can do
Amend the right-to-counsel ordinance to guarantee legal counsel for all facing evictions in court, regardless of income.

The problem
Stable housing support for families in Denver is under-resourced while the need rapidly grows. In just 9 years, the child homeless population has multiplied by 5.
Because the only family shelter in Denver doesn't have enough rooms, families are forced to go into shelters that aren't set up for them and their unique needs. We need more shelters specifically created for families.
What Council can do
Work with the Mayor on 2027's budget to include the creation of new family-focused homeless shelters.
